Utah Files Criminal Charges Against Kalshi and Two Co-Founders, Including 13 Felonies
Bollcoin, Oct. 29 — According to Utah media outlets Deseret News and KSL, the Utah Attorney General's Office on Wednesday local time filed criminal charges against prediction market platform Kalshi and its co-founders Tarek Mansour and Luana Lopes Lara, totaling 14 counts: one second-degree felony (pattern of unlawful activity), 12 third-degree felonies (promoting online gambling) and one class A misdemeanor (promoting gambling). The charges allege that an undercover agent, after confirming he was located in Utah, placed bets on 12 sporting events through Kalshi. Kalshi responded that the move is "a gross overreach, and Utah is clearly playing politics," and said it will defend itself in court. Previously, the U.S. CFTC sued Utah on Monday, arguing that federal law gives it exclusive jurisdiction over event contracts.
